Busongora Kingdom


The Songora or Shongora also known as BaChwezi and also as BaHuma, are a traditionally a pastoralist community of the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa located in Western Uganda and Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A great deal of information about the culture of Busongora became accessible in 2015, thanks to a UNESCO-sponsored documentation project. UNESCO's project partners were Busongora Kingdom and the Uganda Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Services. The project lasted two years, and involved a UNESCO-trained team of 12 Basongora, who tasked to do field research, inventorying, analysis and translation of the various elements that constitute the endangered culture of the Basongora.

The Busongora Community Land Trust was established on April 19, 2021, through the concerted efforts of the Basongora community, led by King Ndahura II Kashagama, in response to the historical land tenure challenges and the need for sustainable land management. It marks a pivotal moment in the centuries-long struggle of the Basongora people to reclaim their ancestral lands. This endeavor not only aims to address the injustices rooted in colonial and post-colonial land policies but also sets a new standard for communal land management that prioritizes environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, and gender equality.  Read more: The Busongora Community Land Trust
